Hit the Movies

So I’m not open minded, am I?

I’ve got a great bunch of coworkers, but sometimes, they just get on my nerves. For example, tonight in the middle of discussions, we got to talking about movies and how picky I am. They figure that I think that if I don’t see a movie, I think it sucks. Not true, but not unfair in the least – I’ll admit that the previews do tell me whether or not I see a movie, as my time, because of how I currently live, is somewhat precious, and so is my money. On more than a few occassions have I said that I will not see a film because the preview sucks. Doesn’t mean the film sucks, it just means it’s of low priority to me right now. (Picky I may be, but I do allow for circumstance to change me.)

So, since I’ve been planning on getting a few lists together, I figure right now is a good time to challenge: Tell me 5 movies you think everyone should see and why. If I have seen it already, I’ll post in a future posting, as well as my picks, and a tally of all of your picks. (If you feel uncomfortable posting here, feel free to email me – I’ll respect your privacy if you want it.)

There is one stipulation I put out now: don’t criticize anyone else’s opinions on this. I’m not going to criticize your opinions, I’m only going to tally up the votes. The top five that I haven’t seen yet I will watch at a future time and post opinions on at that point. (A top five overall will also be posted.)

One last thing: If you’re a coworker, I’m going to see about doing something separate with you. Go ahead and post here if you like, but it won’t count towards the one at work. šŸ˜€

  1. 1.) Office Space
    2.) Donnie Darko
    3.) Saw
    4.) Napoleon Dynamite
    5.) Butterfly Effect

    Yeah…love these movies. I know that Office Space is a programmer’s ‘must-see’, so I’m assuming you’ve seen it. šŸ˜€

  2. Actually, the only one I’ve seen on that list is “Butterfly Effect.” Office Space came out when I didn’t have time to see it in theatres (in fact, only the last 3 did), and I’m not home often enough to rent movies. (If I see most films, it’s in the theatres.) Heard good things on all but “Napolean” – one of my co-workers vehemently didn’t like it.

(Of course, some days I wonder if he likes anything, by the amount he complains – those are his bad days, I think. šŸ˜‰ )

  3. I love Office Space and Donnie Darko — great picks! So here’s mine (boy, if this won’t be a telling post…)

    0) Army of Darkness
    1) Monty Python, Search for thhe Holy Grail
    2) Ravenous (caution: gory)
    3) The Dark Crystal (cation: kids movie)
    4) Princess Mononoke (caution: the best anime feature film ever)

  4. You know it’s been a bad day when you forget your own rules. I’ve not seen “Ravenous.” (In fact, until now, I’ve never heard of it, either.) The other four I have seen. Thank you, Aaron.

  5. I’ve senn all of those but Ravenous, and Princess Mononoke. I’m not a bit fan of Anime. I watched part of Akira once, and lost interest quickly…haven’t watched another since. On a side note, my kids love The Dark Crystal(Even though they’re scared to death when they watch it ).

  6. Just an update: The deadline is march 31st; after that, this particular blog section will be closed for comment.

@ Anthony: I’m a huge fan of Anime, and have a good chunk of DVDs. Akira, for as good as it is, stands small compared to its manga (graphic novel) counterpart of which it’s based on. There have been MANY good films and TV shows since then, such as Ghost in the Shell, Spirited Away, Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, so you may want to give it a second chance. šŸ˜€

(Sorry, but I have to respond to a “I don’t like Anime” post. Fail to see why people disregard it as kid stuff.)
